Mac MSG Viewer: MailPeek for Mac, iPhone and iPad

Mac MSG Viewer: MailPeek for Mac, iPhone and iPad

Received an Outlook .msg file on your Mac, iPhone or iPad and need to read it? MailPeek lets you open the saved email, view its contents and access the attachments without importing it into a mailbox first.

MailPeek is available on all three devices. As a Mac MSG viewer, it fits into a desktop workflow; on iPhone and iPad, it lets you read saved Outlook messages while away from your Mac. It processes files locally and provides separate views for the email, headers and message source. It also supports EML files and mail archives, so you can work with different email formats in the same app.

Open MSG files on iPhone and iPad

You do not need to move a saved Outlook message to a Mac to read it. With MailPeek installed on your iPhone or iPad, you can open the MSG file on that device and inspect the email and its attachments locally. This is useful when someone sends a saved message and you need to check its contents while travelling or working from an iPad.

One Universal Purchase covers Mac, iPhone and iPad. The screen recordings below show the macOS app; Finder Quick Look and batch export are features of the Mac version.

How to open MSG files on Mac with MailPeek

For a single message or a folder of saved emails, the workflow is straightforward:

  1. Install MailPeek from the App Store on your Mac.
  2. Drag your .msg file into the MailPeek window. You can drop several files into the app at once.
  3. Select a message in the sidebar to read its contents and view its attachments.
  4. Save the attachments you need, or export the email for sharing or archiving.

The sidebar search helps you find a message by filename, subject, sender or recipient. This is useful when a colleague sends several saved emails and you need one particular conversation or document.

Read Outlook messages and save their attachments

MailPeek displays HTML, plain text and RTF message bodies where those representations are available. Attachments appear in separate cards, with actions to open or download an individual file or download all attachments together.

If an email contains a winmail.dat container, MailPeek can decode it and expose the embedded files. This helps when the document you expected to receive is bundled inside an Outlook attachment.

Review attachments before opening them

MailPeek flags potentially risky attachment types and double extensions. Safe Mode adds restrictions for unsafe files and can preserve quarantine behavior. This helps you inspect what a message contains before opening its attachments.

Preview MSG files in Finder

On macOS, MailPeek includes a Quick Look extension for .msg files. You can preview a saved Outlook message in Finder before opening it in the app.

For a directory of exported emails, this provides a quick way to check a message while browsing files.

Open emails locally, with remote content blocked

MailPeek processes email files on your device, and its core viewing features work offline. You do not need to upload a message to an online converter to read it.

External HTML content is blocked by default. If a message needs remote resources to display fully, you can explicitly allow them for that message. This gives you control over whether opening a saved email loads content from an external server.

Export an MSG email as PDF or EML

After opening a message, you can export it as PDF, EML, HTML or plain text. A PDF is useful when you want to share a readable copy with someone who does not have an MSG viewer. EML provides another email-file format for subsequent use.

MailPeek also supports exporting addresses from message headers as VCF contacts. On Mac, batch export lets you export several open messages in one run.

Export several messages in one session

On Mac, you can select multiple open messages for batch export and choose several output formats in one run. For a handover, for example, create readable PDFs alongside EML copies. HTML and TXT provide alternatives when you need the rendered content or just the text.

Inspect headers when you need more detail

The Email view covers everyday reading. For troubleshooting, the Headers and Source views provide access to the details behind the rendered message.

You can inspect sender and recipient information, look at routing headers and examine the message source. These views are useful when checking an exported email or investigating how a message was formatted.

Work with other email formats

Alongside Outlook MSG files, MailPeek supports .eml, .mht / .mhtml and .mbox. On Mac, MBOX import also handles Apple Mail export structures. This is useful when saved messages arrive from several sources and you want to inspect them in the same application.

For an archive exported from Apple Mail, MBOX support provides a way to inspect saved messages and their attachments together. You can then export the messages you need for the next step of your work.
